How do lip enhancements in Sydney work?

As we age, our lips naturally lose volume and plumpness due to a decline in collagen and elastin — proteins that provide structure, support and elasticity to the skin. These changes, combined with a natural shift in lip shape over time, result in lips becoming thinner and smaller.

Lip enhancements are performed using ultra-thin needles and a local anaesthetic to ensure patient comfort. After the procedure, mild swelling or bruising may occur near the treatment site, but this usually subsides quickly. Results may vary, and occasional touch-up treatments can help maintain volume and a plump, defined shape.

Lip enhancement aims to address the loss of lip volume due to ageing, lifestyle choices or environmental factors.. If you would like more information, please contact us to book a free in-clinic consultation.

Volume restoration treatments for your lips

Just like any aesthetic procedure, the lip enhancement process involves an initial consultation where we discuss the treatment protocol, perform a thorough assessment and explain important safety information.

Post lip volume procedure regime

A common post-treatment maintenance regime includes:

  • Apply ice packs to help reduce swelling (although this is generally not required)
  • Arnica (a homeopathic remedy) cream or tablets are sometimes recommended a few days before and a few days after treatment to potentially reduce bruising.
  • The use of painkillers such as paracetamol is often not required but may be used if needed for a few days after treatment.

Bruising and swelling tend to disappear after a few days but can persist for a week. Other common reactions after treatment include temporary lumpiness, unevenness in the lips or redness.

Reach out to our registered nurses and team if you have any concerns or questions.

Potential side effects and risks of lip augementation

While most reactions are mild and temporary, it’s important to know what to expect and how to ensure your safety during the process.

  • Slight bleeding at the injection site is common and typically resolves quickly.
  • Bruising, redness, tenderness or swelling may occur and usually subsides within two to three days.
  • Rare allergic reactions can include prolonged redness, swelling, itching or firm bumps near the injection points, which may persist for a longer period.
  • Vascular occlusion, a rare complication, happens when filler enters a blood vessel, causing a blockage. This may appear as whitening of the skin, which can progress to greyish-purple discolouration or tissue damage if untreated.

If you have a known allergy, you must inform our team as you most likely would not be eligible for the treatment.

Lip Enhancement Goals

Who is not a suitable candidate for lip enhancements in Sydney?

While lip enhancements may provide noticeable results, they may not be appropriate for everyone. Below are some factors that might make lip fillers unsuitable for certain individuals:

  • Medical conditions and allergies

If you have severe allergies, particularly to any ingredients in the product or a history of anaphylaxis, lip enhancement treatments may not be recommended. Be transparent about any known allergies or medical conditions during your initial consultation to ensure your safety.

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women

We do not perform lip enhancements on women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Due to hormonal changes during these periods and the lack of studies on the safety of lip enhancements in these circumstances, it is best to wait until these stages are complete before you even consider getting a lip enhancement treatment.

  • Active infections or skin conditions

If you have an active infection, cold sores or inflammation around the lips or face, treatment may need to be postponed. Administering the product into an area with active issues could worsen the problem and increase the risk of complications.

  • Autoimmune disorders

Individuals with active autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, mixed connective tissue disease, and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis may not be suitable candidates for lip enhancement.

  • Previous complications with lip enhancement treatments

If you have experienced complications with lip enhancements in the past, further treatments might not be advisable. A thorough discussion of your medical and cosmetic history will help determine your suitability.

Frequently asked questions about lip enhancements

‍Are lip enhancement treatments painful?

We try our best to minimise any painful sensation during the treatment by using a topical medical-grade numbing agent as well as a numbing agent within the injected product.

Will my lips feel unnatural post-treatment?

Most likely no.When kissing, eating or talking, your new enhanced lips will usually feel just as your own.

What are the volumisation products made from?

They are made from a naturally occurring substance found in every cell of your body, helping to keep cells plump and hydrated. This substance can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, acting like tiny water balloons to create instant volume when administered.

Is my lip volume treatment rsults permanent?

Results from lip enhancements may range between four to 12 months. Once your lip goals are achieved, you may return for top-up treatments as needed.

Can you have lip enhancements if you're pregnant?

These treatments have not been tested on pregnant women, so we do not administer this treatment to a pregnant woman.

Can you have lip enhancements if you're breastfeeding?

The short answer is no.

Breastfeeding women should avoid lip enhancement treatments due to the hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy and breastfeeding, which can affect the outcomes and longevity of the product. Additionally, no studies have confirmed the safety of lip volumisation treatments during this time. Prioritising the health and safety of your baby is essential, so it’s recommended to wait until breastfeeding is fully completed before considering lip enhancement treatments.
